Our Methodology

How TruckSafe Compare ranks 15 commercial truck insurance carriers — transparently, with sources cited.

Editorial Independence Statement

TruckSafe Compare receives no payment, advertising revenue, or commissions from the insurance carriers we rank. Funding comes entirely from our parent organization, SafeBridge Insurance Group, which views this resource as a public-good contribution to the trucking industry.

The five ranking criteria

Every carrier in our index is scored across five weighted dimensions. The composite score (0–10 scale) determines ranking position.

Scoring weights

Financial Strength (AM Best)30%
Claims-Handling Reputation25%
Coverage Breadth20%
Pricing Transparency15%
Trucker Reviews10%

Criterion 1: Financial Strength (30%)

We use AM Best Financial Strength Ratings as the primary measure of an insurer's ability to pay claims under stress.

For MGAs and fronted programs, we apply the rating of the underlying carrier paper. We disclose fronting structures explicitly in carrier profiles.

Criterion 2: Claims-Handling Reputation (25%)

Claims handling is where insurance proves out. We score this dimension using:

Criterion 3: Coverage Breadth (20%)

We assess each carrier's appetite and coverage forms across the 7 trucking-relevant lines:

  1. Auto Liability
  2. Physical Damage
  3. Motor Truck Cargo
  4. General Liability
  5. Non-Trucking Liability (bobtail)
  6. Trailer Interchange
  7. Workers Compensation (where in appetite)

Carriers offering more lines under one paper get higher scores because consolidation reduces gaps between policies.

Criterion 4: Pricing Transparency (15%)

We score how openly each carrier publishes minimum premiums, discount programs, and underwriting guidelines. Carriers that hide pricing behind broker-only quoting score lower.

Criterion 5: Trucker Reviews (10%)

We aggregate publicly-available trucker reviews from:

A minimum of 25 verified reviews per carrier is required for this dimension to factor into the score. Where insufficient reviews exist (e.g., very new MGAs), we mark the dimension N/A and redistribute the weight proportionally across the other four.
